Kuala Lumpur Malaysia 21st June 2018: The MERITUS Awards Gala – presented by Petron – was broadcast live from Astro TV Studio One in Kuala Lumpur on the 8th of June. Featuring the awards for the just-completed 2017-18 FIA Formula 4 SEA Championship, the night was a big success, finishing up with a surprise announcement from McLaren F1:
Congratulations to all the award winners. McLaren is very happy to work with Peter Thompson and Formula 4 in Asia. I have pleasure in confirming that McLaren Applied Technology invites three of the top award winners, including last year’s champion, for a simulator evaluation and an introduction to McLaren F1 facilities,” confirmed McLaren F1 Team Principal Eric Boullier.
With 508 points, 16-year-old Daniel CAO from Shanghai China is the FIA 2017-18 Formula 4 SEA Champion! In second place is Kane Shepherd, aged 16 from Bangkok Thailand, with 377 points, while the third-placed winner at just 15 years old is Belgian driver Ugo De Wilde, with 212 points. Joining the three drivers from the 2017 Championship is Indonesian Presley Martono, inaugural F4 SEA Champion.
The four lucky winners are soon to visit McLaren headquarters in Woking for a two-day driver evaluation in the McLaren simulator and fitness centre, including a private tour of the McLaren Automotive road car manufacturing facility. This prestigious F1 prize will no doubt open the door for our young Formula 4 SEA winners, providing them with a link to McLaren’s Driver Development Programme.
In addition to this wonderful opportunity to learn from McLaren’s winning heritage, the three young drivers come away with the coveted prize of FIA F1 Super Licence Points.
F4 SEA is the first step on the FIA ladder to F1 in Asia. For 2018 the Organisers have arranged an exciting 24-race calendar with rounds in India, Malaysia and Thailand scheduled, commencing in July. The drivers’ best 18 races count towards the championship title and of course the most coveted prize of all is the 12 FIA Super Licence points for the first-place winner.
The focus for F4 SEA is firmly on cost-effectiveness and equality: all cars are identical, all engineers, coaches and data are open to all drivers to develop their racecraft. Keep up to date on our new season via our website and social media.
