The Formula 4 South East Asia Championship – fueled by Petron – is on the verge of rolling out its exciting third season of the FIA-certified one-make Championship. But before that, the MERITUS Awards Gala will crown the 2017 champions and recognise the staff who supported them, at a glamorous evening of motorsport entertainment in Kuala Lumpur.
MERITUS.GP, the sole race service provider for the FIA Formula 4 South East Asia Championship, will host its annual black-tie awards ceremony, dubbed the MERITUS Awards Gala or MAGs for short from Studio 1 of the All Asia Astro Broadcast Centre. Presented by the team’s sponsor PETRON, the televised event is a celebration of the brilliant season that’s just concluded for the race drivers and their families and for the loyal staff, suppliers, officials and circuit personnel who made the racing possible.
The MAGs was established to promote and profile the amazing feats accomplished by the “fastest teens in Asia” over the past season in a broad range of categories. The June 8th event will see commendable drivers presented with trophies for Overall Champion, Rookie Champion, Fastest Lap (at Sepang, Buriram and Clark Circuits), Best Drive, Best Overtake and Up-and-Coming Talent.
Success in motorsport does not just depend on the skilled wheel-men who stood out all season – as the saying goes: “it takes two hands to clap.” While racing drivers are the main focus of the awards night, their dedicated mechanics and engineers are part of the reason they emerged victorious and they also deserve recognition. MERITUS.GP employs over 50 ‘Great People’ at each event who work systematically and tirelessly over the course of each race weekend to ensure the cars are prepared to the highest standards.
The mechanics and engineers are monitored and guided by the masterful hand of Team Manager Sharli Mohamad. With over 20 years’ experience under his belt, the Kelantan-native leads his squadron of specialized mechanics with the utmost precision.
“I’ve been involved in motorsport since the mid-nineties and joined MERITUS shortly thereafter. Over the years, I’ve worked in the various formulae which MERITUS has contested, right up to GP2 Asia. The team has been invaluable in helping me grow as an engineer in this industry and continues to specialise in training enthusiastic technicians and taking them to the top of the sport,” explained Sharli.
Two new categories have been added to the awards line-up: the Best Mechanic and Best Engineer award. The newly-minted categories join the rest of the awards in honouring and promoting the consistent results from the team of people who worked hard to achieve their goals. For example in the inaugural event Presley Martono of Indonesia took home the coveted top prize with rival Faine Kahia just a hair’s width away. Both racers are prime examples of athletes who put everything on the line in order to achieve their dreams.
With over 25 years’ experience in the motorsport industry and 36 titles under their belt, MERITUS.GP – the sole race service providers of the FIA Formula 4 South East Asia Championship – is building and promoting the quality of Asian motorsport on a par with the services provided in Europe and the international arena. The focus of the ‘MAGs’ is also to educate the Asian market about the FIA’s ladder up to the highest echelons of motorsport via F4, F3, F2 to F1.
