Free practice kickstarted the weekend with Muizz Musyaffa making full use of that home soil advantage we’ve been talking about setting down a 2:18 on his first real lap seven tenths ahead or Ghiretti. But we’re expecting 2:14s in these Formula cars and although the track was quite cool this morning there’s still a way to go and we know free practice is key as it determines the order the cars are released in qualifying and u need to be up the front to get a clear track and put yourself on pole.
Kane shepherd knows that well as he just set the fastest first sector while Alessandro Ghiretti broke into the 2:17s and Kane followed suit two tenths faster. The battle between Thailand and Malaysia that has been brewing all year continues here with Ghiretti topping Shepherd the next time around with personal bests in all sectors and they flip flop yet again with Kane finding the 2:16s
But Muizz Musyaffa just set the fastest middle sector and newcomer Malthe Jakobsen from Denmark found his pace slotting one hundredth of a second in behind Muizz. So, the actions not only between the top two and we’ll see more from the mid grid as Alister Yoong just jumped into sixth. The Malaysian wildcard Yoong’s really found his pace in the second half of the season and might just make things interesting for us come race day.
But it’s his team mate Muizz Musyaffa is doing just that as we speak. The Malaysian is regularly the fastest around the track and sets a 2:16.682 only to be topped by Thailand’s Shepherd by two tenths. I think that means it’s going to be a battle between Thailand and Malaysia this weekend and we couldn’t be happier to see a Malaysian winning at home.
The last time around Shepherd found his time in the second sector. But now he’s three tenths faster than Muizz best in sector one and matches sector two two looking to be the first man to break into the 2:15s. We saw shepherd dominate in Sepang at the beginning of the year and he’s doing it again now going two tenths faster to set a 2:16.435 putting all the pressure on Ghiretti.
The flying Frenchman had a near perfect weekend winning five out of six races the last outing, but he just ran out of time this session with free practice ending – Malaysia, Thailand, France as Muizz Musyaffa dashed across the chequered flag two tenths faster than anyone else with a 2:16.208. While newcomer Mathew Jakobson did well to secure fourth and Lucca Allen with no prior testing at Sepang finished 7th just ahead of Emily Linscott and Shahkirah Shaharul.
