2018 Event 4 Race 2

3.4 mins

We had a great race this afternoon in the second outing of the Formula 4 SEA championship here in Madras, but Alister Yoong had the race of his life! The Malaysian driver of the yellow number 22 speed machine raced off the line from third, danced past Ryo and Antoine, and succeeded in taking the lead before the second corner. Irishman Luke Thompson also had a fast start looking into Turn 1, but not quite close enough to take Potty as Kane Shepherd tried to go around the outside of both drivers.

Coming into the second sector it was Malaysia, Belgium and then Japan, Ireland, France and Thailand racing so closely we couldn’t tell who was who.  Thompson made a move up on Ryo into Turn 4 and Alessandro followed him around, looking for the same side-by-side overtake he managed against Luke in Turn 7 of a previous race.

Thompson managed to hold out that lap but couldn’t resist Ghiretti long as the more-experienced French driver was right up behind him and made a move around the outside at Turn 4 setting himself up with the inside line through the sweeping right-hander of Turn 5. Luke gave all he had, but the two drivers collided mid corner gifting Luke’s position to Kane Shepherd who started to hunt down Antoine Potty.

Speaking of Antoine, he had been closing in on Alister Yoong at the front of the pack. Alister had been driving flawlessly so far, but he hadn’t had a chance to breath and that wasn’t going to change anytime soon. The Belgian driver just behind him made a small mistake coming out of turn 8 which Shepherd and Ghiretti capitalized on. The three drivers were three-wide coming into Turn 9 but it was Ghiretti who pulled ahead gaining two positions and relegating Shepherd to fourth.

Now Alister had to hold out against the man leading the 2018 Championship for five grueling laps. In the end it came down to the chequered flag. Ghiretti had tried everything all over the back of the Malaysian driver, he carried more speed out of Turn 12 and pulled out hoping to grab the flag, but Alister Yoong got there first, winning his first F4 race with a spectacular performance which delighted his audience.

That of course upsets the event championship so be sure to watch the last race live and tune in to find out who walks away at the head of the field. https://fiaf4.asia/2018_Live_Race-12
